If you are planning a regular visit to Darjeeling, take a vehicle from NJP / Siliguri / Bagdogra and insists on coming up to Darjeeling through the National Highway55 (also called the Tenzing Norgay Road). You can stop at Kurseong or any of the numerous stall dotting the highway for refreshment. The journey through NH-55 will take you approximately 3-3/12 hours.
For those planning to visit Kalimpong from Darjeeling regular jeep services on seat sharing basis are available. The bookings can be done from the Kalimpong Motor Syndicate situated at the Darjeeling Motor Stand (Super Market Complex). You can also hire a taxi to Kalimponging and stop at Teesta Bazar for white water rafting. Shared taxis will not stop at Teesta Bazar thus denying you and opportunity for white river rafting.
Note: Even if you hire a vehicle from Darjeeling to Kalimpong, kindly inform the driver of your white water rafting plans.
Fare per passenger in seat sharing taxis from Darjeeling to Kalimpong is about Rs 70/- (For hired taxis the rates vary: kindly contact your travel agent).
CALL OF THE WILD
If you are planning to trek to Sandhakphu we advise that you first come to Darjeeling. You should do your last moment shopping at this hill town before heading to Maneybhangyan the next morning.
If you want to take a jeep to Sandakphu, you should hire a vehicle from Darjeeling to Maneybhangyan and then switch over to a Land Rover.
OFF BEAT
People planning to visit off beat locations should ensure that your tour operator (or contact person) should arrange a vehicle to take you to your destination. No regular services are available for tourist from Siliguri to places like Bunkulung. Even though one can break the journey at Kalimpong and proceed to places like Lava, Lolagoan or Kafer. It is better to ensure to take a hired vehicle from Siliguri.
Those planning to stay in a tea gardens (which are usually away from urban settlement) should hire a taxi to reach those places as there are no regular services on a seat sharing basis available to most of the gardens.. Infact, a package on tea tourism includes a pick up from the nearest airport/railhead. One should realize that tea gardens do not have many shops in its vicinity and you are advised to keep this in mind while planning to spend your holidays at the tea garden.
